The population was 3,504 at the 2010 census. History Essex was incorporated as a town in 1819. It was previously a part of the town of Ipswich and was then called Chebacco Parish. The first European settlers arrived in 1634. At that time, the land formed part of an area inhabited by Native Americans of the Agawam tribe. The name Chebacco is Agawam in origin and refers to a large lake whose waters extend into neighboring Hamilton. Conomo Point, the eastern-most part of the town, is named for the Sagamore or Chief of the Agawams, Masconomo, the leader of the tribe in the late 17th century. Early on, Chebacco Parish lobbied for status as an independent town, asking for permission to build a meeting house. In colonial times, the existence of a meeting house in a settlement conferred de facto autonomy, so Chebacco Parish was denied permission to build such a structure. Popular history tells that one written dictate was issued stating that "no man shall raise a meeting house", so the residents of the settlement interpreted it as to mean that women would be allowed to do so. It is reported that a local woman, Madam Varney, assembled the town's women and construction of a meeting house was carried out by them while the men looked on... Essex borders Hamilton to the west, Manchester-by-the-Sea to the south, Gloucester to the east, and Ipswich to the north. Essex is located 11 miles (18 km) northeast of Salem and 33 miles (53 km) northeast of Boston. Though not accessible directly by a major highway, Route 128 clips the corner of town, with exits located in neighboring Manchester-by-the-Sea and Gloucester. Route 133 passes from northwest to southeast through town, and the eastern end of Route 22 is at Route 133 in the center of town. The Ipswich Essex Explorer bus provides weekend service during the summer connecting with the MBTA Commuter Rail at Ipswich along the Newburyport/Rockport Line, as well as providing service to Crane Beach and other nearby attractions. The Rockport portion of the commuter rail line passes through neighboring Manchester-by-the-Sea and Gloucester... Former shipbuilding center The town of Essex was once home to a prosperous shipbuilding trade. This industry accounted for most of the revenue of the town from the days of its settlement as Chebacco Parish until the early part of the 20th century. Once a leading supplier of schooners for Gloucester and other Atlantic fishing communities, Essex did not adapt to the transition from sail powered wooden ships to engine powered metal vessels and this activity disappeared around World War II. There have been recent attempts to return to shipbuilding on a small scale as a tourist attraction and they have met with some success. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum stands as a living testament to the wooden shipbuilding industry and the neighboring boat yard owned by generations of the Story Family still constructs and launches classic wooden ships built in the Essex tradition. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipbuilding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boat_building

고난의 조선사: 휘청이는 거제도 지역경제 Turning our sights to Korea's shipbuilding industry. As the government wrestles with restructuring, the local community surrounding shipbuilders struggles to stay afloat while trying to pick up the pieces in the face of a harsh reality. Shin Se-min travels to Geoje city to take a closer look at the drastic twist of fate for the once seemingly invincible industry with the first installment of our two-part special. It used to be a city, proud to be called the home of leading shipbuilders,... but now it's slowly losing its vibrance. Geoje is known as the base of two of Korea's big-three shipbuilders, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering and and Samsung Heavy Industries,… which were part of a pack that once controlled nearly 70-percent of the world's market share. But now,... the entire shipbuilding industry is faced with an inevitable fate of downsizing owing to slumping oil prices and slowing global demand. "The leading shipbuilders racked up collective losses of nearly seven-and-a-half billion U.S. dollars last year... and new orders slumped to their lowest level in eleven years in February. Making matters worse,... the spillover is starting to directly affect the local economy." Neighboring shops and restaurants that largely cater to workers from the industry are starting to close shop,… due to a steep slide in business. "Sales have dropped by one-third in the first quarter this year compared to the previous quarter. I no longer see men and women in uniforms hanging out after work." The property market is no different. Contrary to a bump of nearly two percent seen in Korea's overall housing market,… prices in Geoje have gone down by one percent. In the recent months,… the rental fees of studios near Daewoo Shipbuilding have dropped by 30-percent. On the labor front,… the situation is much worse. Shipbuilders in the city are expected to cut back as many as 20-thousand employees this year from their 90-thousand strong workforce. Although restructuring is considered a much needed move to salvage the industry from its rut,... a former worker of one of the leading shipbuilding firms says things are not that simple from the eyes of employees. "Many of my former colleagues have already left their workplaces,... and it's not easy finding an alternative job... especially given the short amount of time we had and the fact that we were high-paid workers." Experts worry that losing large groups of employees with high wages in the process of corporate restructuring will result in a drop in household spending,... thereby putting the health of the local economy at greater risk. 팔려가는 골리앗 크레인...한국 조선산업의 눈물 Back in 2002, a shipbuilding company from Sweden was forced to sell its massive crane to a Korean shipbuilder for one U.S. dollar... you heard me, one. It's been referred to as the 'Tears of Malmo' after the Swedish city. Fourteen years later, a deja vu - except it's Korea shedding the tears... as it struggles to get a grip on the crash of its once-powerful shipbuilding industry. Kim Hyesung reports. A 32-hundred-ton Goliath crane stands tall at a shipyard in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do Province. : connyoung "This 105-meter-tall crane was once a symbol of Korea's prosperous shipbuilding industry. But it's now being dismantled to be shipped off to Romania in a fire sale." The crane was once valued at over 22 million U.S. dollars but that's since plunged to two million. It's illustrative of the ongoing slump in the shipbuilding industry, which has forced small and mid-sized Korean shipbuilding companies to close up shop and sell off their assets. "This shipyard used to be bustling with workers. But now it's all gone. Two-thousand people have lost jobs. It's heartbreaking." A bit further south in the city of Geoje, home to the world's two leading shipbuilders, the effects of the industry's demise are even more stark. This government employment support center that opened last August is visited by over 150 people a day. "I've worked at Daewoo Shipbuilding for 34 years. I left last October. I don't know what I can do other than building ships, so I came here to get job training, and will hopefully find a new job soon." Over 10-thousand people in Geoje have lost their jobs this year alone. But with the volume of orders for new ships expected to remain at a third of normal levels in the coming year, according to Clarksons Research, people with jobs still feel insecure. "We don't have as much work as in the past. No more nightshifts. Our wages have been frozen since last year and the situation is pretty bad. We rarely come out to have dinner together like today." As workers tighten their belts, restaurants and retail stores in the area are also feeling the strain. - "This street used to be full of workers who would hang out late until midnight. But now, you rarely see people eating in restaurants after ten p.m. Our sales have dropped by over half compared to the same period last year." For the last four decades, the shipbuilding industry has played a critical role in Korea's economic development. But due to plunging global oil prices and overcapacity, even the nation's top three shipbuilders have struggled to stay afloat in recent years. And on top of that, they're in the process of working through an aggressive government-led corporate restructuring drive to pull themselves back from the brink. "Korea's shipbuilding industry has never been hit this hard. But still, it is a cyclical industry. The boom will come in a year or two. Though the current restructuring process is painful, Korea needs to prepare itself and keep its competitiveness." As the corporate restructuring drive continues, many people are leaving Geoje -- streets and apartments are empty and stores are closed. Here, this winter feels colder and harsher than ever, and many are holding out hope for an early spring. Kim Hyesung, Arirang News, Geoje. SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) Gokuldas, main carpenter known as ' Mestri ': "We belong to the ancient ' Edathampadi ' family - it was our family which built ships for King Cheraman Perumal. From that time, all of us have been doing this work. I worked with my father for a long time and since his demise, I have built about 15 Urus ( traditional vessels ) on my own. My father built more than 50 such vessels." 12. Tracking of plank made of special wood used for building Uru 13. Wide of men working in hold of vessel 14. Mammad Koya Mooppan, Uru builder: "The specialty of Beypore Uru is that it is very strong. Our 'Nilamboor Teak ' (wood) is famous for being used in the construction of Uru....but it is now expensive and hard to find. We have been using imported wood, but it is not the same (quality) as the special Beypore teak wood. As for the shape of the vessel, it was designed by expert carpenters... but they are no longer with us." 18. Wide of men building vessel 19. SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) Gokuldas, main carpenter known as ' Mestri ': "The thing to note is that before taking it (the vessel) into water, you have to do all the calculations in your mind. It is only after taking it into water you can understand whether you have made any mistakes ....but nothing has gone wrong to date. You have to be careful during construction - and pay attention to balancing, as well as the shapes and measurements of the wooden planks." 23. Wide of Beypore market place 24. SOUNDBITE (Malayalam) Yahya Sore Manzil, owner of Uru-building company: "We need about eight months to build a vessel. But these days we do not have enough labour available, so it has taken more than a year to finish making just the basic structure. After a few months, a ship will come from Dubai to take it away. Fitting of the engine and other things will be done in Dubai itself." 32. Wide of river as seen from inside the vessel LEAD-IN : Automation may be the order of the day for most manufacturing these days, but craftsmen at an ancient ship building centre in South India still use their bare hands to make huge vessels. Using traditional carpentry techniques and mental calculations, the expert ship builders manage to construct a perfectly aligned luxury ship used for travel and trade. STORYLINE: Beypore in North Kerala used to be one of the busiest trading ports and fishing harbours, located 10km south of Kozhikode town, at the mouth of the Chaliyar River. The dimensions vary according to the size of the vessel.
